2021 Eco-Resolution

The start of a new year marks an incredible opportunity to implement change. While some might be trailing dietary changes like Veganuary, others might be looking to start more slowly, by simply making more considered purchasing decisions.

Every time you buy, you are making an investment in your own future and the future of this planet for generations to come. So to help you make an Eco-Resolution and shop more ethically, here are a few tips to bear in mind before you buy!

IS IT...Recyclable?

Using recycled or recyclable products is important for a number of reasons:

  • Reduces pollution from waste sent to landfills and incinerators
  • Prevents pollution from collection of new raw materials
  • Conserves energy and natural resources such as water and wood
  • Aids the economy using a domestic source of materials

IS IT...Plastic-Free?

The problem with plastic is that most of it isn't biodegradable. Each year, 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced and 40% of that is single-use. Scientists predict that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than there are fish. Try as much as possible to avoid plastic packaging when food shopping, always take your own re-usable shopping bags, and visit refill stores to fill up empty bottles.

IS IT...Vegan?

Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. And Animal agriculture is the leading cause of species extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction.

IS IT...Independent?

When you shop with an independently-owned or local brands there is more accountability and you can be sure that the products are locally sourced and of a good quality. You’re also putting your hard-earned money back into the local economy, as well as helping to fund small brands who are pioneering the necessary change that many big corporates are avoiding.

Of course it’s almost impossible to go about our everyday lives and create absolutely zero impact, but by taking these small steps and asking ourselves the right questions before we make our purchases, we can dramatically reduce the impact we have and be a positive force for change!

Wishing you a very Happy 2021!
